Forums are the easiest places from where you can actually build links that bring in Huge amount of visitors. Infact there exists some huge SEO Companies, Who literally rely upon forums to build their links, Because they know the strategies that will bring in highly targeted forum readers.
Okay now for those who do not understand what is a forum?
An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site. It originated as the modern equivalent of a traditional bulletin board, and a technological evolution of the dialup bulletin board system. From a technological standpoint, forums or boards are web applications managing user-generated content.People participating in an Internet forum may cultivate social bonds and interest groups for a topic may form from the discussions.
Now The process involves Finding the Right Forums, Content Strategies for the forums, Link Posting Strategies & Building Forum Relations.
Before we start the process, You need to understand that Forums are the places where people regularly meet, help & discuss their common intrest, People love spending their time over there, So if you spam over there, People will just hate you & your sites/blogs. Imagine you hang out daily at your favorite coffee shop with your friends & an Insurance Agent starts disturbing you every day? Asking you to buy insurance policies, What would you do? You feel like beating him up right? Same applies to forums. Almost all the quality forums are highly moderated to keep the spammers out, So if your goal is to spam those forums, Please avoid doing that, This will actually affect your business & website reputation.
Now lets start the procedure,
1. Searching the right forums:
The most important step is to search for right forums, There are multiple ways to do this. remember you need to make a list of forums along with their alexa ranks. Most forums display how many members do they have, Take those numbers also in to consideration. Remember the 80/20 rule, 20% of the forums will bring 80% of the traffic, but since we also get benefits from SEO stand point. We will list all of them.
1. Google Groups Search : The method works like this, Go to the search page, put in your target keywords, Google will return all the forum posts that are talking about your target keywords, This helps you identify what are the forums in your niche.
2. Google Search : This method works something like this, Go to Google.com search for your target keywords in this format. ”keyword” + forums . This is also a good method to find all the forums talking about your niche.
3. Big Boards : Big boards is a directory of all the high visitor forums around the world. This list includes popular english speaking as well as international forums which have huge amount of members registered. It is properly categorized in to different niches, So you can select your niche & start adding them in your list of forums.
2. Content Strategies for forums:
As we have also discussed earlier in our previous post about blog commenting best practices , here the rules are pretty much the same.
1. Do not SPAM.
2. Do not post the same comment on a sequence of posts, Reason being, Not all the posts have the same content.
3. Interact with other community members, It is beneficial. It builds networking and relationships as well.When community members post content, they like other people telling them what they think or give their own views and opinions.
4. Share something good.
5. Share some of the best insider tips, Secret tricks etc… That only an experienced expert would know or share something that every one in your niche would love to know. If you are in a gardening forum & let’s say you know some Fertilizer’s that will help them to grow their plants faster, something that will help them protect their garden, Some gardening tips to gardening related problems.
6. Do not start flooding them with links, spend some time on the forum, Share & Discuss stuff, Chat with them, Make friends, Share videos etc….

3. Linking Strategies :
Once you have established your self as an expert, you can start building links using different methods,
1. Forum Signatures :
- Forum signatures are something like, Whenever you post something on the forums, your signatures will automatically get embedded in your post’s footer.
- Some forums make these links no-follow, But they are very few in numbers, So no need to worry.
- Different forums have different policies regarding signature postings, Make sure you go through them.
- Few of them will require you to pay some money for live links in signatures. It’s worth it , Only if the forum is really popular(Check their alexa rank ) & if it has huge number of members.
- Signatures are very useful, because all your posts are going to show your links. So lets say if you have made 15 posts on a particular forum, You get 15 red hot links from 15 different posts to your sites.
2. Links Within Your posts.
- Putting links withing posts has its own advantages, As compared to Signature Links
- You can put different links in different posts, This way you can build better targeted & relevant links from different posts.
- you can share best of your info & put them on your blog as well, Add a link to your blog in the end calling it: Source: “Link”
- Another way to put links can be, Use controversial content saying something like this “This guys is saying “Some Controversial stuff”,check out his “link”.
